Finally, a new 1986-95 Toyota IFS suspension system designed with no strings attached, no down-side. Downey thinks the new suspension system makes all others on the market look silly, but you can decide that for yourself, read on. Downey's new kit suffered multiple delays reaching market, but the end result appears to be well worth the wait.

  1. There are no application limits on 1986-95 Toyota's; fits with 4 cylinder or V6, fits with or without air conditioning, fits pickup and 4 Runner, 4WD (and 6 lug 2WD).
  2. Does not lower front axle housing or control arm pivot points. This means lower control arm mounting is not over-leveraged like suspension "space-down" bracket kits. Downey's is a maximum ground clearance system.
  3. This is an extremely simple kit that provides 12" to 13" of tire travel utilizing 2" longer control arms with fully lubricated Mega Travel ball joints (remachined original equipment ball joints) as opposed to highly perishable Uniballs.
  4. Downey retains all original steering components. This is important because Downey was able to achieve significant tire travel without resorting to the use of highly perishable heim joint steering.
  5. Being the newest kit on the market, Downey took advantage of seeing weaknesses in other control arm kits, then made radical improvements in the new Downey arms; tougher chromoly materials, longer and stronger plating between ball joint forces and torsion bars, adequate clearance for full bodied shocks (plus the coil spring conversion which will be available at a later date).
  6. Control arms are not so excessively long (2" longer, as opposed to competitors 3 longer) that they over-leverage (and possibly damage) the torsion bars and torsion bar mounting components. Not so excessively long that front tires have a hideously wider stance than rear tires.
  7. Downey provides longer 4340 axle shafts that route from the original equipment outer birfield CV joints to Downeys new 930 Porsche inner CV joints.
  8. Downeys Porsche inner CV joints not only withstand a zillion horsepower, they also reach a 29 degree angle. This allows maximum tire droop/extension without resorting to lowering the front axle housing merely to protect the original equipment 22 degree inner CV joints.

The stock IFS front torsion bars are 22.8mm, which is adequate for stock 28” tires and wheels, or for normal highway use with heavier tires and wheels. Install a set of 31” tires (or larger) then go off road with your 22.8mm torsion bars and see what happens. The heavier the tire, the worse your off road experience will be.

  • Downey’s 26mm Torsion Bars will eliminate most of the hard bottoming in off road terrain.
  • Downey bars will hold your cranked-in lift without fatiguing.
  • Downey bars will give a softer ride when lift is cranked-in because your stock bars become radically pre-loaded when cranked-in, while Downey’s 26mm bars are relatively relaxed at any ride height.

Your stock rear springs utilize 3 upper primary leafs for lift and soft ride, and one or two lower secondary leafs for load carrying capacity. Our new springs utilize 4 primary leafs for lift and support, but with a soft ride. Our 4 leaf spring is built to the same poundage rating as your stock 3 leaf set, therefore the ride is no stiffer than stock. These springs include polyurethane bushings, and rear brake proportioning valve spacer. Downey’s rear springs are shown without lower “Load Carrying Leafs” installed. (They are not included in Downey’s springs; your stock “Load Leafs” can easily be transferred to the Downey spring).

We have developed a set of rear coil springs that offer higher ground clearance and increase tire travel, without giving up a comfortable ride. This new coil set raises the vehicle 1. The springs have a larger diameter which is offset by their length to equal a stock spring rate. The coils are powder painted and include a longer stainless steel braided brake line, proportioning rod remounting bracket, ABS hose remounting bracket, and detailed installation instructions. We have also responded to numerous request for a heavier duty set of rear coils for load haulers, trailer towers, or those using the 20 gallon auxiliary tank. These new coils are 20% heavier duty, and give the same 1 of lift. Either set of coils use Doetsch-Tech #8250D or 4MV09-SL shocks (shocks not included).

4 runners equipped with Downey's 1 coils (#48290) and 1 spring seats (#48257) not only have 3" of additional extension. The side to side travel from fully compressed to fully extended can cause the stock upper links (of the four link system) to bend. Should this happen to you, Downey has a better idea! Here are chromoly upper links with spherical rod ends. Expensive? Yes, we tried the 8,000 lb. rod ends, they didn't hold up. We now supply 20,000 lb. heat treated chromoly rod ends–nuf said!

No matter what brand or configuration your 4 Runner rear suspension is, there is the possibility you could gain additional suspension droop (extension) when using longer shocks. Longer shocks, however, have taller shock bodies (oil cans) that could clobber the upper shock mounting panels during suspension compression (bottoming-out). You can use a 2 hole saw to cut out the upper shock mounting panels, bolt-in these 1 tall shock mounting cones, then use longer shocks for additional travel.

EXAMPLE – Downey’s 1 lift 4 Runner rear coils use 9” travel shocks that open up to 23” long. These cones allow use of 10” travel shocks that open up to 25” long.

Add-a-leaf springs are designed to increase payload capacity, they carry an extra 500 lbs. Increased spring rate also means a firm ride when the truck is empty, therefore add-a-leafs should only be used on trucks that have a permanently mounted heavy load. Add-a-leafs have also become popular as lift kits because they are “cheap lift.” They give approximately 1 of lift on mini pickups. Longer rear shocks will be required.

These are 22” long add-a-leafs that allow removal of the stock lower load carrying leafs (AKA Diving Boards). These new leafs become the bottom “5th” leaf of a Downey 4 leaf spring. They do not increase lift or load carrying ability, but they do radically enhance off road vehicle control by allowing removal of the thick load leafs, which converts Downey springs into softer, more progressive springs.

This Pre-Runner add-a-leaf set is identical in design and purpose to the Pre-Runner add-a-leaf set described above, with one exception; this set includes thick aluminum spacer blocks to fill the gap created by removal of the stock load carrying leaf. This is necessary because of the isolated spring mounting clamp system featured on the ‘89-newer standard cabs (not Extra Cabs).

Highway cornering, or sliding in off road terrain can cause the springs to fan out of alignment. Whenever you add or subtract leafs from your spring pack, you could need these zinc plated self-locking alignment clamps. They are a perfect fit on the Pick-up/4-Runner spring width, and they are supplied in a two clamp set.

For 30 years we have sold heavy duty spring shackles with a welded-in gusset; the gusset locking both vertical side plates together to form a bullet-proof spring shackle. Downey spring shackles are constructed with 2” by thick steel plates, then silver zinc plated, and include hardened mounting bolts and self locking nuts.

Downey now has a whole new spring shackle concept for serious off roaders! We retain the heavy duty 2” wide by thick steel plates, but we omit the gusset. WHY?, because we have proven that when there is radical spring twist (as on the Rubicon trail) the spring will destroy the outer collars of the spring bushings if the two shackles plates cannot move independently of each other.

Here’s the most copied kit in America! We designed Downey’s loop kit for the most serious off roader because it uses longer shocks for additional travel. The inner fender aprons must be bent in or trimmed slightly. This kit will fit when using a Trailmaster lift kit, but a lower bump stop modification will be required. (Shocks not included).
FEATURES:

Requires cutting off the stock upper shock tabs per instructions.
Once stock shock tabs are removed, kit bolts on.
A body lift kit is NOT required for installation.
Loops are bright silver powder painted.
Uses Bilstein #0428B. (The Hot setup!)

This kit is built for serious off-roaders who understand how excellent ultra-soft rear suspension performs in fast pre-running conditions. This kit allows use of single or double ultra-soft MV-12 Doetsch-Tech shocks in 8” or 10” travel configuration. The upper tubular crossmember is a weld-in design that permits custom positioning. Both shocks can be positioned in front of or behind the differential housing; both shocks can be mounted vertically or angled, and the tubular crossmember can be raised or lowered (before welding) to accommodate various shock lengths and/or travel. This kit also includes weld-on lower mounting brackets that can be welded to the front or back side of the differential housing.

You guys and gals with Rancho upper control arms are using the additional leverage of the longer arm to hammer down the upper bump stop (snubber) steel mounting brackets. This condition then allows more suspension extension than anticipated, consequently you snap axles and shatter CV joints. Here are weld-on upper snubber gussets. They lay directly on top of the original snubber mounting brackets, get welded to the frame, then provide the combined strength of both the original brackets and the new gussets!

  · Polyurethane does not rot or deteriorate from oils, ozone, smog, chemicals or road salt. That means these bushings will not deteriorate or cause mushy uncertain responses when driving. They make a noticeable improvement in the way your truck handles.
  · These bushings are a full floating, non-vulcanized, non-binding design. This is especially important when ride height has been altered or heavier tires and wheels are being used. The hardness of these bushing also helps maintain a perfect caster and camber.
NOTE – These bushings require re-use of the original equipment metal shells and parts shown in photo.

Downey invented the Idler Arm Gusset; it is no more than another remedy for another problem. As we discover what can be bent or broken, we produce the bullet proofing. Most cases of bent idler arms are found on Toyota’s with 4 inch lift kits, but occasionally we find a bent Idler Arm on a Toyota less radically equipped, but more radically used off road. The idler Gusset is a simple bolt-on device, silver powder painted for lasting durability.

You have probably noticed the IFS lower arms swing from below the frame on vertical drop arms. Once the lower control arms become totally bottomed-out in a violent or unexpected off road maneuver, the lower control arms, working through the leverage of the vertical drop arms, tend to spread the frames apart (we speak from experience). This will throw the front-end out of alignment, and prevent realignment until after you visit a frame shop. The front side of your lower control arms has a factory installed tie bar. The rear side is the problem area and needs the Downey Truss.

This rear differential housing truss is identical in design to those used on almost every professional race truck. This kit is a weld-on design to produce a solid one piece housing without bolt-on attachments that are prone to slippage. The over-the-top design lets you maintain ground clearance while adding strengthening “mass” to the housing. We have included a polyurethane fitting in the top center of the truss that can be utilized for your custom designed traction bar or kicker shock mounting ideas. The truss kit also includes an “extended” differential breather, the original breather valve must be removed because it’s height will interfere with truss tube installation. The extended tube must be welded over the original breather hole in the axle housing, chimney up through the truss tube (as shown below, drilling required), then continue up to the frame through provided breather hose kit. The differential housing does not need to be disassembled for truss installation.
