Downey has been involved in Toyota cam designs for years, and we have already rejected most the cam grinds listed in other catalogs. A zillion years ago we offered five different cams for the carbureted 4 cylinder engine. One choice proved to be perfect for 98% of the applications, while there was some customer dissatisfaction with the other cams offered. We came to our senses and discontinued the other choices. We have retained the single choice that gives a perfect mid-range 1500-3000 RPM torque increase (16 ft. lb. gain at 2000 RPM) which gets you up to the normal shifting point of 3600 RPM more quickly. The Mid-Range Cam then builds additional H.P. above 3000 RPM (12 h.p. gain at 5,000 rpm).

Our EFI Cams have been designed to operate within the EFI computer’s tolerances. The computer’s “operating window” restricts the use of higher performance cams, and renders some retailers astonishing claims untrue. The new EFI Broad Range Cam is an excellent 1500 to 5000 RPM Cam that provides a decent increase throughout the entire RPM range, and significantly improves 0 to 60 acceleration.

Downey now offers two Cam choices for the F and 2F Landcruiser engines. The Torque Cam provides better acceleration between 1800 and 4000 RPM. The Horsepower Cam is a better full-throttle performance Cam with 2200 to 5000 RPM effective range (Headers and Holley Carburetor recommended).

NOTE #1 – Stock Landcruiser cam duration (over-lap) is ridiculously too long. We have shortened the duration to improve performance and radically reduce emissions.
NOTE #2 – These Cams are not legal for sale or use in California on emissions equipped motor vehicles.

The old (original) Valve Springs are rated at 59.5 to 71.6 lbs., which is too weak and can cause valve float when using a higher lift Cam. The old springs also coil-bind at .440” of compression, which is the lift of a Downey Cam. Downey now offers high performance Valve Springs rated at 120 lbs. and .570” of compression before coil-bind.
Your old (original) lifters are “flat faced” and worn to the old Cam. The lifters could be replaced, but new lifters are also flat faced, not ground evenly as you would expect them to be, and can destroy the new Cam. The lifters should be slightly crowned, not flat faced. Your local grinding shop should be able to re-surface/crown your old lifters for less than the cost of new lifters (which would also need to be crowned).

Downey offers this economy 7” degree wheel for fine tuning your Cam adjustment. While a Downey Cam will line up as well as the stock Cam, you cannot squeeze every ounce of performance out of the Downey Cam without degreeing. Degreeing will also be necessary with milled heads to achieve Downey’s 2 degree advanced specification. This universal wheel includes spacers for multiple engine applications.

All 20R/22R engines up to the 7/82 production date have a double width timing chain. The double width chains and sprockets are less prone to stretching, wearing out, and becoming noisy. All 22R engines since the 7/82 production date have a single width timing chain, but all 22R engines up to the 8/84 production date can use the double width chain and sprockets. 8/84 and newer engines must use the newer single width chains and sprockets, or an expensive and elaborate new dual chain conversation for 85-95 models.

Our lightweight aluminum Rocker Arms are standard replacement parts for the 22R engine. They are most ideal as a conversion for the 20R engines originally equipped with the heavier cast steel Rocker Arms. A “wear pattern” is worn into Rocker Arms over an extended period of time. The wear pattern can be detrimental to a new Cam Shaft. You should consider Rocker Arm replacement when installing a new Cam. In fact, some Cam guarantees require the use of new Rockers.

The original Toyota Rocker Shafts have only 2 oiling holes on top the shaft. Now you can get new Rocker Shafts with 4 oiling holes on top. These rocker shafts fit 20R, 22R, and 22RE engines.
