This kit totally eliminates the problem of broken steering knuckles and studs. The addition of two studs in each arm effectively prevents the steering arm from becoming loose and shearing off the studs. The knuckle housing is also thicker than stock, and larger gussets have been added around the outside of the knuckle for extra strength. Precision CNC machined, each knuckle is a direct bolt on. Six Stud Knuckles are sold as a pair and include a set of special 6 hole shims for use between the top of the knuckle and the steering arm. Stock lower bearing plates and shims from your old knuckles are needed for knuckle assembly. A minimum of four additional steering arm studs are needed.

Our six stud high steer kit includes left and right six stud steering arms, tie rod, drag link, four rod ends and your choice of flat or curved pitman arm. To use this kit you will also need an IFS style steering box, and Six Stud Knuckle Kit, four additional knuckle studs & hardware. Fits 1979-1985 Toyota Pickup and 4Runner solid front axles.

WARNING - Saginaw Steering Conversions require cutting, welding, and a high degree of skill and craftsmanship from the installer. Downey cannot control the quality of your installation, therefore all Saginaw Steering conversion components are purchased and installed by individuals who accept the entire responsibility of being the designer and final manufacturer of their vehicle. If you are not qualified to perform this conversion, consult a professional installer, or do not attempt the conversion.

Thought about doing this for years, finally got off our butts and did it! Here’s an entry level power steering gear box that saves you money, and a trip to the wrecking yard where they sell smelly old worn out gear boxes in every configuration except the one you need for your Landcruiser conversion. These are remanufactured 800 series boxes with new stainless steel balls, new oil seals, AND dual stage valving just like the AGR boxes. The one thing you don’t get is AGR’s 1500 psi (for monster tires). What you do get instead is the ability to use any economical off-the-shelf power steering pump (new, used, rebuilt, not included). These boxes all have a 3/4-30 splined input shaft.

This unique gear box mounting plate universally accepts Saginaw gear boxes with three or four mounting bolts. The mounting plate features an upper flap for ease of locating against the frame, plus it adds additional strength after welding. This is a steel casting (welds like low carbon mild steel) so that special welding rods or techniques are not required.
NOTE - Our installation instructions explain why we use this mounting plate design over any other style.

This is a thick steel frame enclosure plate. It can be welded to the inside of the left hand (driver side) frame prior to a Saginaw Steering conversion. The left hand frame is presently only partially boxed-in, consequently the power steering gear box mounting plate listed above can only be partially welded onto the frame. By fully steel plating the frame, you can fully weld the mounting plate - simple. You can order a pair of plates, then fully box in both frame ends prior to winch installation. This will provide a rigid, flex-free frame during winching, especially side pulls.

Downey developed a new steering shaft assembly that uses matching u-joints. No more bulky PTO upper u-joint. We’ve mated a compact upper u-joint that mounts onto your Landcruiser’s stock 3/4” shaft to a matching lower steering u-joint that splines directly onto your power steering gear box. Slip joint travel is accomplished by the hex shaped drive shaft sliding freely inside the hex shaped lower u-joint. The hex shaft and both u-joints are black oxide plated for a tough gnarly appearance.

This plate is used to anchor the stock column to the firewall. The plate is not pre-drilled since bolt patterns vary from model to model. The anchor also includes a special bronze bushing used to center the drive shaft in the column once it is cut free from the stock gear box. This anchor is required on all August 1972 and older FJ-40/45’s. Downey’s new steering shaft upper u-joint requires a new mounting and welding technique utilizing the special washer supplied in this kit. Installation instructions are provided.

Here’s a great new upgraded product, a 4 bolt self-centering flange bearing used to center and anchor the stock Toyota steering drive shaft at the firewall. It is a radical improvement over the original brass bushing style anchor because the new flange bearing is greasable and self centering. This new anchor is required for all steering conversions on Sept. 1972-Newer FJ40/45’s.

We never got off our butts and produced a dropped Pitman Arm until we developed a Downey suspension kit that required a dropped arm. We’ve always provided the straight arm, which is ideal for 0 to 2 ½" of suspension lift. The new 2 ½" drop pitman arm is ideal for anything above 2 ½" of suspension lift (i.e. Downeys new 4” lift spring assemblies).

This is the 26” long Tie Rod Tube required for FJ-40/45 power steering conversions. One end is RH American thread for use with the RH threaded tie rod end used at the pitman arm. The other end is LH Metric thread for use on your original Toyota tie rod end. Downeys tie rod has been zinc plated, and has an .880 OD for use with your original clamps.

For way too many years we’ve seen Landcruiser power steering conversions utilizing GM hoses that spaghetti all over the frame and engine compartment. They don’t look like they fit the GM vehicle properly, let alone your cruiser! Downey has finally remedied that problem with an adjustable and routable hose kit. The kit features custom Downey manufactured gear box fittings that make an immediate 90° turn just above the threads. This keeps the hoses close to the gear box for perfect entry into the engine compartment (above frame, below grille panel). Matching fittings are used at the pump. The 4’ lengths of high pressure braided hoses can be trimmed to desired length before assembly into the screw-on fittings. Two plastic hose looms are provided to route and secure the hoses along your inner fender apron.
