So the dealer talked you into a new 4WD Toyota truck with ADD (automatic differential disconnect). Now you find yourself contending with performance loss, mileage loss, additional wear on your 4WD components (even in 2WD), and significant limitations on suspension travel and lift. Even worse, there’s no inexpensive way to install unlocking hubs on your ADD vehicle. Downey has taken a couple steps toward bringing down the price tag of converting from ADD to unlocking hubs:

  Pickup & 4 Runner – All 89-95 models with ADD (Automatic Differential Disconnect) have a whole new reason for installing manual hubs. These models are not equipped with locking hubs, consequently the CV joints spin whenever the vehicle is in motion. If the suspension is cranked up slightly the CV boot angle is increased and constant RPM will destroy the boots (usually within 10,000 miles). Manual hubs will completely eliminate the highway RPM, and lower off road RPM will not be detrimental to boots. Plus you’ll enjoy the sudden surge is gas milage and performance when the hubs are unlocked. ADD models DO NOT need the Hub installation kit listed below # 43279.

  The brake backing plates can be a hassle on 79-85 Toyota solid axles. They often get bent from trail damage, and small rocks can get trapped between the backing plate and the rotor causing noise and damage. This kit contains two spacer rings that take the place of factory backing plates. The rings are the same thickness as stock for proper component spacing.   Your stock 1986-95 IFS front axles are intended to ride at an 18° angle. You could crank-in too much lift causing the axles to ride at their 22° maximum. The 22° angle may not destroy the CV joints, but it will eventually destroy the CV boots. Here's the remedy: new patented neoprene CV boots. The OE boots are manufactured from "thermoplastic hytrel" which is thin, deforms, and stiffens with age. Neoprene boots stay soft and remain bendable for a much longer cycle life. Each boot includes CV grease, stainless steel clamps, and easy-to-follow instructions.  
 
 
 
 
   
  Not only are the factory boots poo-poo (thin, brittle, and crack easily), but the Tundra inner CV boots get pinched between axle and CV boot mounting ring---absolutely bogus!! Downey has developed a new Tundra inner CV boot that mounts onto the axle as usual, then mounts onto the 4” outer diameter of the CV joint instead of the smaller boot mounting ring---easy deal.

  These are economical replacement outer Birfield Joints and complete Axle Assemblies. They have been made slightly tougher than stock while ideally remaining the weak link. They are not the $250.00 each “indestructible” Birfields that let you blow the crap out of your expensive differential gears and lockers. 1979-85 P.U. and 1975-87 Landcruiser complete axles include inner axle and outer Birfield pre-assembled. Downey has manufactured adapters to adapt 7” travel Spicer U-joints/Slip Yokes to Toyota transfer-case and differential flanges.   Stock Toyota slip yoke splines are 3½” long, the long travel slip yoke splines listed above are 7” long, and these “Extreme Travel” slip yokes have a 12” long spline (19” long over-all with u-joint). Extreme slip yokes are 23% stronger than stock splines, and they are best suited to the longer rear drive shafts on Toyota 4WD Pickups because of their excessive length (could be cut down for use on shorter drive shafts). Cutting and welding is required for installation. The u-joint has a 60mm x 60mm bolt pattern that should be a direct fit on 84-88 Pickups and 91-97 Landcruisers (no adapter needed).
