Our original intention was to create a molded tank as a less expensive auxiliary tank option, not necessarily with expensive “fuel cell” attributes. Well, we ended up with a full blown Fuel Cell made from durable puncture resistant “cross-linked” polyethylene, totally seamless. The new cell features a billet aluminum top plate that houses #6AN race-style pickup and return line fittings, and an optional digital sending unit --- very trick. Shape wise, the new cell is identical to the original 22 gal. steel tank; in fact our new aluminum skid plate fits the old steel tanks perfectly. The cell includes simple mounting straps and race-style filler neck. Aluminum skid plate and dual tank plumbing kit are optional.
NOTE-You can not use Downey’s fuel cell with digital sending unit on 1964 through 9/72 FJ-40’s in conjunction with use of the stock tank and stock dash gauge.
  1. You must use Downey’s fuel cell as your one-and-only tank, in which case you can use Downey’s digital sending unit with a 6 volt drop circuit.
  2. Or you can use a stock tank with stock sending unit, and Downey’s fuel cell without sending unit.
  3. On 9/72-newer FJ40’s you can use any combination of tank/sender since they are all full 12V systems.
Sending units for 1964-Sept.72 tanks are 100 ohms empty, 3 ohms full, and require a solid state 6V drop. Sending units for Sept.72-83 FJ40 tanks are 120 ohms empty, 17 ohms full, and operate on a full 12V. When fuel cell is being used with an aftermarket dash gauge (normally 244 ohms empty, 33 ohms full) you will need to confirm the Ohms value with your gauge supplier before we can supply the correct sending unit. A very lavish instruction sheet accompanies the tank, it includes multiple wiring and plumbing scenarios.

This is an optional skid plate designed for use with the 22 gallon steel auxiliary tank or polyethylene fuel cell. The skid plate is formed from ¼" thick aluminum plate and features 3 beveled holes for a gnarly appearance. The skid plate is mounted with front zinc plated loops that wrap around the tubular shock mounting crossmember, and rear clip-nuts that snap onto the frame’s rear crossmember. Also included are two adhesive backed felt strips for insulation between tank and skid plate --- neat stuff.

Downey is offering a trick flush mounted race-style filler neck with recessed cap for our new fuel cell. You will need to cut a round hole in the quarter panel for mounting the filler neck behind the right rear tire; our installation instruction sheet provides exact cutting location. The fuel cap includes a stainless steel lanyard cable to prevent cap misplacement. Also included is a 2” ID x 14” long fuel filler hose and two stainless steel hose clamps.

If using the new fuel cell as a stand alone main tank, you will not need special plumbing hardware, simply route a pickup hose from tank to fuel pump. If using the fuel cell in conjunction with the original equipment tank, special plumbing hardware, and an electric switching valve are required. This plumbing kit includes an electric switching valve, “T” fitting, 25 ft. of 5/16” fuel hose, 10 hose clamps, and 2 #6AN hose barbs. A DPDT toggle switch is optional.

These are sturdy 14 gauge coated steel tanks with an approximate 14 gallon capacity (varies due to evapo-emission control system). Each auxiliary tank solidly bolts to the vehicle in four mounting locations, and fits the 1979-95 4WD Pickup and 1984-89 4 Runner. When you top-off both tanks, stock and auxiliary, your gas gauge is indicating that both tanks are full. When empty, your gas gauge indicates that both tanks are empty. Tanks mount into the area immediately above the spare tire. The spare tire will mount identically (chain and crank) suspended approximately 4” lower than before. You may want to consider a suspension lift kit to buy back some of the lost ground clearance. These auxiliary tanks have their own filler neck and cap that mount at the rear of the passenger’s side rear wheel well.

These are the same gravity feed auxiliary tanks described above with the following exceptions:
  • If your model has a frame mounted spare, the new tank is 11.5 gallons and mounts above the spare tire.
  • If your model has a rear swing-out mounted spare, you can use the 11.5 gallon tank, or you can use the larger 20 gallon tank that mounts directly to the frame behind the rear differential.
NOTE – Because the 1990-95 4 Runner rear spring rate is extremely soft and a topped-off auxiliary tank can lower the rear end approximately 1, we recommend you also install our 1 lift rear coil springs when using the 20 gallon tank

The Tacoma tank costs considerably more than the older pickup tanks because this tank requires a transfer pump and much more involved plumbing paraphernalia. We have squeezed out about 15 gallons capacity after allowing for the spare tire crossmember and smog dome on top the tank. This tank rigidly mounts onto the spare tire crossmember (drilling required). Like the other Pickup tanks, this tank will lower your spare tire 4” so you might want to give a suspension lift kit some serious thought. This tank also includes its own filler neck that mounts at the back rear corner of the driver’s side rear wheel well.
